Supervisors Call for Traffic Enforcement in Ramona Acres
by Joe Naiman

The Board of Supervisors provided direction to the county’s Chief Administrative Officer to improve traffic safety on the private roads in Ramona Acres.

The 5-0 vote December 9 directs the CAO, in conjunction with County Counsel and appropriate county departments, to draft an ordinance which will allow the enforcement of traffic regulations in the Ramona Acres community and directs the CAO to determine the appropriate speed limit on roads in the Ramona Acres community. The CAO was directed to return to the board within 45 days with a proposed ordinance and a proposed speed limit.

The streets in Ramona Acres are mostly private dirt roads, and law enforcement agencies don’t have the authority to enforce the California Vehicle Code on private roads. An increase in reckless driving and off-road vehicle activity in the area has been causing recentdisturbances in the community. "Speeding and off-road activity on the roads has been very frustrating to both residents and Sheriff’s Department officials," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob.

The Sheriff’s Department has been working with residents to address several issues, including problems with speeding and off-road vehicles. The adoption of a county ordinance which would allow the Sheriff’s Department to enforce traffic regulations on the private roads in Ramona Acres is one potential solution which has been discussed.
