Ramona’s clubs and organizations continued their intensive activities in March and look forward to April’s events. The San Vicente Valley Club will have a sing-along April 28 at the San Vicente Inn. Baritone Dave Castberg, who holds an appreciation for Rodgers and Hammerstein compositions, will be joined by several members of the Ramona Lutheran choir. Reservations for the event, which begins at 11 a.m. with music commencing at 1 p.m., should be made at the front desk of the San Vicente Inn by April 23. The Ramona Trails Association featured guest speaker Rick Landavazo at the group’s March 4 meeting. Landavazo spoke about oak trees, which will need a full season to determine whether or not they will regenerate and thus should be left alone after fire damage, unless they are in danger of causing injury. The Ramona Trails Association also sent Bonnie Salbach and John Degenfelder to a Feb. 18 meeting at Balboa Park to meet with other community trails groups. The group’s next work party will be April 10 at the Mount Woodson trail, where poor planning has led to annual erosion. The Ramona Equine Industrial Network is waiting for information on the zoning aspects of the county’s general plan update. Immediate plans include seeking volunteers to handle parking tasks at the Ramona Roundup Rodeo. The rodeo work is REIN’s annual fund raiser. REIN, which has no set number of board members, also is looking for volunteers to serve on that board. Upcoming Ramona Woman’s Club activities include a fashion show, luncheon and card party on April 8, a review by Lillian Troensegaard of Oufkir Malika’s "Stolen Lives" on April 12, and an April 22 visit by the Ladybugs to the Green Thumb Nursery in San Marcos, followed by lunch. Arts Unlimited will hold an April 3 fund raiser to raise money for the nonprofit organization that provides arts, dance and performance classes. The Mother-Daughter Spring Boutique will include a fashion show, Mother’s Day gift shopping, tea and cookies, entertainment and raffle prizes. The fund raiser will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Village Fitness Center in San Diego Country Estates. Advance tickets are available at Jill’s Dance Studio. Presale tickets are available at Jill’s Dance Studio by calling (760) 788-0914. The March activities of the Ramona Kiwanis Club included a speaker from the In His Steps reform center; a March 6 hawk watch at the Wildlife Refuge Institute, which drew between 20 and 30 participants to raise funds for the Wildlife Center; and a highway cleanup March 20. The Kiwanis Club is taking reservations for a May 16 play at Lawrence Welk Resort Theatre, north of Escondido. Ramona’s Soroptimist chapter visited the Adult Day Care Center on March 17, where they provided cookies and punch and played games with those at the center that day. The Soroptimists’ transitional housing program included moving a mother and three young boys into a furnished transitional housing unit during March. April activities include a fund-raising bunko night for members and guests, as well as the regional spring conference April 16-18 at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego. The Ramona Garden Club is preparing for Pioneer Day; on April 13, the group will meet at 1245 Highway 78, between Haverford and Weekend Villa roads, to work in the greenhouse potting plants for sale at the Pioneer Day celebration. On April 24, the garden club will have a booth and will sell plants for Pioneer Day at the Guy B. Woodward Museum. For more information or to volunteer, call Tracy Turner at (760) 787-1752. On the other side of Highway 78, Wynola Junction Antiques and Collectibles is now hosting a Country Flea Market the first Sunday of each month. The flea market runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and seeks vendors and sellers with quality antiques, rare and vintage collectibles, and handmade crafts. For more information call Tracy Turner at (760) 787-1752. Ramona’s TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) chapter is preparing for Area Recognition Day, which will take place April 16-17 at the Handlery Hotel in San Diego. The largest weight losses for each chapter will be recognized at that event, with the largest overall winner — by losing — advancing to International Recognition Day. On March 22, Ramona’s Masonic Lodge had its Public School Night, in which the lodge honored the top children from each public school in Ramona, Julian and Warner Springs. The lodge also had two special First Degree initiations in which the new level was conferred upon two brothers by their father. Little People’s Learning Center, based at Ramona United Methodist Church, is working on a fund raiser to provide most of the money for a commercial play structure on the playground. A Musical Chairs Carnival will be held at the church May 1, and all ages are encouraged to pay the $5 per participant donation and play musical chairs. The event, which begins at 1 p.m., will include a silent auction and food sales along with games, a children’s jump and face painting. |
