Gas Mileage vs. Gas Prices
by Randy Waitman With today’s gas prices rising at an alarming rate, what are we to do? Here are some hard-core facts: In 1960, the gas price per gallon was 32 cents; in 1975, 75 cents; in 1980, $1.25. Today, we have $2.50 per gallon, which feels more like somebody holding a gun to me while I fill up my tank. Here is another side of the fact finding: the 1930 cost per mile in fuel was 36 cents, versus today, 12 cents per mile. Now, before you moon launch and start swearing, let me explain. First, our cars today are very fuel-efficient, both in actual fuel consumption and aerodynamics, thus increasing fuel efficacy. I’m not making excuses, because this is very painful for me, too. But now, let’s get down to it! Better mileage, that is. First, keep that car maintained. What do I mean when I say "maintained?" Here is your list of maintenance items: 1. Air filter 2. Fuel filter 3. Oil changes 4. Tune-ups, and with fuel-injected vehicles, include a fuel-injection service. Carbon buildup is not your friend! 5. Air pressure. Keep those tires inflated for less rolling resistance. 6. Keep unnecessary items at home, not in the trunk. Imagine if you had to lug around an extra 100 pounds — you wouldn’t like it either! 7. Keep that car washed and waxed. (OK, well maybe not, but it will look good!) 8. Driving style (and I’m not talking about drifting or having the most expensive set of sunglasses). Rabbit starts, passing cars when you both will arrive at the next light at the same time (chill), 55 to 65 mph — remember, driving at 70 or 80 mph will decrease your mileage anywhere from 2 mpg to 10 mpg. 9. Last tip, and this might be the most painful: Fill that tank up every time you need gas and compute the miles per gallon. This is the fastest and most efficient way to find out that something is not just right and that you’re losing miles per gallon. Happy motoring — and drive safe! P.S.
