The Adult Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15. To find out the book being reviewed, call the library (760) 738-2434. Need help with your computer usage? A docent is available from 10 to 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday at the library, to lead you through the maze of computerlessness to computer literacy! Besides the Friends of the Ramona Library assisting with library programming and purchase of books and equipment, there are many volunteers working many hours, such as the grandparents and book readers, volunteers reading and correcting the shelves to assist in books being shelved for quick locating, docents, youth assistants and more. To express appreciation of the volunteers’ time and efforts expended on behalf of the library, a Volunteer Recognition breakfast was held April 23, compliments of these special community members: McDonald’s, Dr. Susan Homesley, Kmart, Orchards, Albertsons, Don’s Market (Santa Ysabel), Sun Valley Market, Ron’s Tire & Brake, Ramona Cleaners, Mi Ranchita Taco Shop, Kathie Duncan, El Michoacan, El Nopal, Mamma Rosa’s and the Balloon Menagerie. A special thanks for your community participation! Joan Gansert, fund-raising committee chairwoman, met May 12 with Marilyn Crouch, director of the San Diego County Library, for a review of the status of Ramona’s application for Proposition 14 funds for our new library. Congratulations to Ramona, which is still in there! Extended lobbying efforts were considered to let the bond board know "what," "where" and "why" Ramona is in need of a larger library. Schools, organizations and committee members are encouraged to participate in lobbying through letter writing. A decision is not expected until September. In the meantime, suggestions for your participation in this "last stand" effort will be forthcoming. The Friends mini-book sale is scheduled on Saturday, June 19, in the Community Room. During the 10 to 10:30 a.m. "Friends" special time, sign-up membership forms will be available for those who are not yet a member. The book sale continues until 2 p.m. The sale includes a voluminous category of gently used hardbacks and paperback in fiction, nonfiction, children’s, how-to’s, etc. Come in and browse for real bargains for your travel or summer reading. Look for a 3-foot-by-2-foot hard-carved, polished Friends logo on the library wall, presented to the library by Will Prior. Prior’s talent in art carving started as a hobby. He subscribed to patterned magazines for ideas, then decided he preferred his own art expressions, so he experimented. In 1988, Prior’s wife encouraged him to enhance his talent by taking lessons with Clay Johnson, which he did for a couple years until Johnson moved. Prior’s theory is: "It’s better to do original things than to follow everyone else’s path." A Ramona resident since 1986, he is a member of the California Carvers Guild in Escondido. Thank you, Will Prior! The Friends appreciate this thoughtful, talented artist who has given of his time and expertise to beautifully hand carve its logo for the library and has named Will Prior an Honorary Life Member. Save Tuesday, July 6, for registering for the "Go for the Gold — Read" Summer Reading program. The library will be closed Monday, July 5, commemorating America’s Independence Day. |
