Spencer Valley School
Regeneration and hope were the dual themes of this year’s Shakespeare production at Spencer Valley School. Students at the tiny school selected the Bard’s "As You Like It" for their annual fund-raising show presented May 18-20. Everyone in the school participated in the show, which was put together by Don Winslow. A streamlined version of the play with simple set, postmodern costumes, and contemporary music, the production raised about $8,000 to benefit the Educational Association Inc., which provides enrichment to Julian-area students, according to principal Julie Weaver. "We had so much support this year," she said, as she listed the names of local businesses that provided funds, materials, or services. Some of these include the Julian Hardware Store, Cider Mill, King Leo candy, Pine Hills Dinner Theater, Candy Apple Pastry Co., Orchard Hill Country Inn, American Gardener, and Volcan View Farm. In addition, a large donation by the Wheatley Foundation was matched by Qualcomm. |
