Ramona Chamber of Commerce Prepares For The Big Event
by Johnny McDonald

The four days of the 34th annual Ramona Country Fair, August 5-8, will be accentuated by theme programs based on the 1950s, ’60s,1800s and a Fiesta. The Junior Fair begins August 2nd.

Randy Waitman, owner of RAE Automotive, returns to the helm of the fair planning committee with some new ideas and a vision to return the Country Fair flavor to this year’s event.

His excitement has been contagious, and he encourages volunteers, sponsors and vendors to get involved, too.

"I’m very energized and excited for Ramona, as this appears to be a great start for the 2004 Ramona Country Fair," he said after conducting the latest planning meeting. "Admission again is free, so bring the whole family."

Thursday will have a 1950s twist, Friday will identify with the 1960s, Saturday will feature the 1800s and the finale will be Fiesta Day. Entertainment and attire will reflect the periods.

Keeping with the themed days, entertainment chairwoman Nora Seidl is looking for bands and sponsors for the stage.

"There will be something for everyone," Seidl promised, as she continues to acquire performers.

She said the opportunity to be the primary stage sponsor is still available and anyone interested in performing or sponsoring can contact her at (760) 787-9455.

The fair is an annual project for the Ramona Chamber of Commerce and is brought to the community through the efforts of many volunteers. It is funded totally by sponsorship from the business community. No deadline has been posted for volunteers.

Waitman said he is pleased to report the return of Christiansen Amusements to provide the carnival rides.

Vendor chairwoman Jo Fox said applications are available. Anyone interested in vendor space can contact her at (760) 803-8306. Application deadline is July 1.

The committee announced that plans are being completed to place several "fun-filled" events in the Fred Grand Arena.

"Utilizing the arena allows us to offer some old-fashioned fun for the community of Ramona," said events chairwoman Kathy Smiley. Without revealing too many surprises, she said participants will be needed "to cook, eat and have a good time."

In keeping with the old-fashioned country fair atmosphere, there will be a watermelon eating contest, seed spitting, golf-cart decorating and team events such as tug-of-war and egg tosses.

"We have sponsor commitments from Albertson’s, Ramona Escrow, Ramona National Bank and Manzanita Press, to name a few," marketing director Robin Rose said. "There are many levels of opportunity still available for anyone interested in a fair sponsorship."

For more information on fair sponsorships, contact Lee Richmond at (760) 789-0742.

In the competition phase, entries will include canning, baked goods, arts and crafts, photography, science projects, agriculture/ horticulture, wine and beer making and others. Blue ribbons and prizes will be awarded to winners as well as participation ribbons and honorable mention.
