It’s Fair Time Again!

by Johnny McDonald

Country fairs generally come in two diverse sections: One deals with young people grooming livestock for showmanship competition and an auction; the other is interested in entertainment, carnivals, food and games.

These two sides, although divided by a fence, are prepared to join hands for the 34th chapter of the Ramona Country Fair, Aug. 5-8 at Aqua Lane and 5th Street.

To some degree, the annual pilgrimage represents the completion of a Ramona entertainment triad that has included a rodeo and air show in the mix.

The fair is a free production staged by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, a sponsored event that welcomes new and old friends.

Randy Waitman, owner of RAE Automotive, is at the helm of the planning committee again and has been instrumental in inserting many changes.

The four days will depict different time periods. Enjoy the return to the 1950s on Thursday, relive the ’60s Friday and the 1800s Saturday. Sunday is reserved for a fiesta. Officials encourage fairgoers to join in with appropriate attire.

"Ribbons and prizes will be offered for best-dressed for each day," said Robin Rose of Progressive Technologies, the public relations chair. "We ask that they rummage through the closet, find the outfit you swore you’d never wear again and win a prize."

Officials point to some location changes on the grounds this year.

"The Food Court has been relocated to provide more shade and seating," Rose said. "Many popular food vendors will return, joined by newcomer Hunter Steak House."

Hot dogs, burgers, pizza, smoothies, barbecue, Chinese, Thai and Mexican preparations will tempt fairgoer appetites.

This year also will mark the first appearance of the Ramona Farmer’s Market to the grounds.

Additionally, many local business and nonprofit organizations will include art and crafts, plus a Kid’s Corner, powered by Ramona’s Council of Arts Unlimited.

"Don’t miss the chamber-sponsored exhibit where the question will be answered, ‘Who has the best pickles in town?’ "Rose added.

Christiansen Amusements will return to provide carnival games and rides.

Pre-sales for ultimate ride tickets have been available at Ramona Pharmacy, Albertsons, Progressive Technologies, and the Chamber.

Several contests have been added this year, including golf cart decorating and pie eating. To participate in the golf cart contest, call Kathy Smiley at (760) 788-9384 or send an e-mail to kathy@ramonafair.com.

Nora Seidl has been scheduling entertainment for the stage.

Performing on Thursday will be the Gin Boughner Production at 6 p.m. Randy Lane, Hammerband and So What Jazzband will be featured Friday at 5:15, 7 and 8 p.m.

Ramona Action Team, Ramona Community Theater and Harrold and The Hog Diddlures will perform at 2, 3 and 5 p.m. Saturday.

Grupo Revelion, Ramona Del Sol ballet folklorico, Grupo Los Solidarios and Grupo Calor Norteno will be on stage Sunday.

The Chamber of Commerce Event Line is 789-1484.
