Library Corner by Avonelle D. Box
“School days, school days...” where has the summer gone? Summer Reading Program, camping, traveling, fun times, but now it’s time for “readin’, ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic taught — not to the tune of the hickory stick!” Young toddlers will be happy to know their Children’s Storytimes begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays with stories and fun times: • Sept. 1: stories, finger plays, crafts and time to explore reading at the library • Sept. 8: “Summer Fun Stories” • Sept. 15: “South of the Border” stories • Sept. 22: Children’s Story Time • Sept. 29: Cow stories — “Hot time in the Old Town” Several events will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Cultural Month at our library: • Sept. 14 at 6 p.m.: the popular Bilingual Storytime “Mexico’s Independence Story,” along with a children’s craft. Parents are welcome. • Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.: The Ramona Del Sol Dancers will celebrate the heritage of Mexico in dance. This is a great program for the entire family. Be sure to mark your calendars for it now! The fund-raising committee for Ramona’s new library is actively compiling and forwarding the “Ramona Needs a New Library” cards to the six state Bond Board members in Sacramento. If you have not recorded your opinion of Ramona needing a new library, cards are still available at the library for your use. California has a new state librarian who chairs the Bond Board members making the decision on whether Ramona will be awarded the 65 percent grant needed for its new library. She is Susan Hildreth, address: California State Library, 914 Capitol Mall, Room 220, Sacramento, CA 95814; Ph: (916) 654-0174, Fax: (916) 654-0064, e-mail: shildreth@library.ca.gov. Brief letters are suggested as the best form of communication, with “new Ramona community library” in the first paragraph. The listing of all six Bond Board members, with addresses, was previously published; however, it is available at the library or from any fund-raising committee member. The importance of reminding each of the state Bond Board members of Ramona’s specific needs for this new library is keen. Will you write today? President Elyse Kuhn will convene a meeting of the Friends of the Library Board of Directors at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15 in the community room. Planning for the coming season is on the agenda. All board members are asked to be present and share in the discussion. The public is always welcome at the meetings. The September Book Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18 in the Community Room. The first half hour, from 10 to 10:30, welcomes Friends Members only. A new after-school Teen Tutor program will be coordinated with the library and the Ramona High School to provide homework assistance on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the library. Look for it the last week in September. The library will be closed Monday, Sept. 6, commemorating Labor Day 2004.
