Mosquito-Hawks, Eaters or Crane Flies?

What people often call “Mosquito-hawks” or “Mosquito-eaters”are actually Crane Flies. They look like an overgrown mosquito, some growing as large as 1-1/2 to 2 inches. Unfortunately they do not prey on mosquitoes. They appear in the springtime, as their larvae hatch from muddy soils. As they hatch, their larvae feed on the bases of grasses. They don’t bite, but live a short time searching for a mate. Adults do not feed. After mating they soon die.
