Julian Classic Motoring Show

Top: The 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe of Judge Joe Diloreto.
By Robert Engberg

If the thought of classic cars makes your heart race, the 2005 Julian Classic Motoring Show is just the ticket. Slated for Sunday, May 29 on the grounds of Julian’s Menghini

Winery, the event will showcase classic cars staged among the apple trees on the winery’s meadow.

The show, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., is unique in San Diego County for hosting both pre-1980 vintage race cars and classic touring cars. This year, a special “Honoring the Past” class has been added for re-created and replica vehicles. “Special Interest” cars of any year also are invited.

This yellow 1954 Lotus MK 9 is owned by Dr. Dick Riddell and is one of only three still competing in American vintage racing.
There will be class awards, live music, food and beverages, wine tasting, carriage rides and an array of unusual and exotic cars. The entry fee of $25 includes a complimentary engraved wine glass. Spectators are admitted for $3. Parking is free.

Plan to enjoy lunch: Organizers will provide four gourmet plates, each at $5, consisting of either a marinated, grilled chicken breast grilled atop a spring mix; grilled vegetable plate with pesto and spring mix; Greek pasta salad with penne pasta, feta cheese and capers; or a cheese and fruit platter with brie, cheddar and baby Swiss, and fruit. Each plate will be served with a baguette and butter.

The dishes are being prepared by the Julian High School ROP cooking class under the direction of Chef Susan Baren.

The Motoring Show is a benefit with proceeds pledged to the Julian-Cuyamaca Firefighters Fund and the July 4th Parade.

Car clubs are eligible for Car Corral parking in the nonjudged area adjacent to the show cars. Call Bob Engberg at (760) 765-1984 to reserve space.

Among the early entrants for this year’s show are Judge Joseph Di Loreto’s 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, Bud Hartwell’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL “Gullwing,” and Dr. Dick Riddell’s 1954 Lotus MK 9, one of only three such cars in the country.
