Ramona's clubs and organizations will be distributing annual scholarships to local students in June, but they will also be involved in other activities as they had been in May.

Members of the Ramona Stars 4-H Club will spend the latter part of June at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, and on June 4 a field day will be held at the Ramona Fairgrounds in preparation for both the San Diego County Fair and the Ramona Junior Fair in August. The Ramona Women's Connection met May 18 to hear Charlotte Rowett explain the process of hostessing one's own Victorian tea and share her personal story titled "A Guidebook for the Rough Road". On June 22 local puppeteer Margaret Griffith-Jones will provide a demonstration of her marionettes and Murrieta's Pauletta Staley, a business owner and sales representative, will provide the speech which will be titled "The Secret Key". The Ramona Garden Club will feature Jack Shoultz of the East County Rose Society at their meeting on June 8. Mr. Shoultz will talk about growing roses organically, and give out a new organic yearly calendar of rose care which will include prevention of diseases, fertilization tips and general organic recipes. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the Ramona Senior Center, 434 Aqua Lane. Everyone is welcome to attend. For additional information conact Iris Price (760) 788-8035.

The Ramona Rotary Club's May speakers included Dale Wallenius, the director of development for the Business Administration College at Cal State University San Marcos, on May 3, banker David Mitchell and Congressional aide Joe Browning on May 10, a representative from the Pan-American Institute in Tijuana on May 17, Civil War re-enactor Nelson Hughes on May 24, and Al Grenier of the wind energy company SkyWind on May 31. The May 10 meeting also included a visit and presentation from a Group Study Exchange contingent from Ecuador, and the Group Study Exchange delegation from Afghanistan visited Ramona on May 21 as the guests of the Ramona Rotary Club at the Ramona Rodeo. June speakers include Rodney Kephart from the Santa Ysabel Tribal Council and San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister. There will be no June 28 meeting, as the normal Tuesday meeting will be replaced by a demotion dinner June 30 in which Bill Jenkin replaces Chuck Demund as chapter president and the other 2005-06 officers also begin their terms. Jenkin will be spending part of June at the 100th anniversary Rotary International convention in Chicago. Rotary's June activities will also include the presentation of five $2,000 scholarships to local high school seniors. The chapter is also seeking sponsors for the July 4 celebration. The Ramona Trails Association's heard Poway trails coordinator Pam Cannon at the group's May 4 meeting. The group's May work party took place May 14 as the trails association helped clean up the staging area in Community Park in preparation for the Ramona Rodeo. Members of the group also directed parking lot traffic for the rodeo May 20-22. During May the trails association donated $10,000 to help purchase 353 acres of land east of Sutherland Dam for the San Dieguito River Land Conservancy; that purchase will be the final piece of property needed to maintain a link from Del Mar to Wildcat Mountain and developers joined trails association members in providing money to assist with the purchase. The Ramona Kiwanis Club activities in May included an interclub visit to Escondido on May 12, participation in the Miracle Mile of Quarters which took place May 15 at Children's Hospital and saw the Ramona chapter provide 3,200 quarters, and assistance with the setup and takedown for the Ramona library book sale May 21. Donations from the Kiwanis chapter during May included $300 to the local Cub Scout day camp which will sponsor four camperships, 80 knitted caps for newborns and infants which were delivered to Palomar Hospital, and more than 100 toys to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar which will be distributed to children in Iraq. Four Kiwanis chapter members — Betty Carpenter, Jim Cooper, Mary Halliday, and Jay Stanovich — are undergoing training to be volunteers at the Cub Scout day camp June 20-24, and the Kiwanis will return to the library for the June 18 sale. In June the Kiwanis will also award seven scholarships of $400 a piece and will have an interclub meeting in San Marcos on June 17. The Kiwanis will also host the initial Bow Wow Pow Wow at Community Park on June 12; the dog show will have 12 different contests and at least three dog adoption agencies. The Ramona Bar Association will host former Attorney General John Van de Kamp on June 29 at the Sizzler in Ramona. Van de Kamp is currently the president of the State Bar of California and has also served as the president of Thoroughbred Owners of California. The San Vicente Valley Club's May activities included the annual home and garden tour May 7 and the presentation of $18,000 in scholarships and an additional $3,000 in charitable donations at the general meeting May 25. On June 22 the San Vicente Valley Club will have a luncheon along with a visit to the stage musical "42nd Street" at the Lawrence Welk Resort. Ramona's Homebirth Support Group met May 18 to watch videos about birth. The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month, and on June 15 the topic will be "Homebirth: Making the Decision". For more information about the homebirth support group contact Karen Wallace at (760) 787-0302.

The Ramona Woman's Club activities in May included a musical trip down memory lane May 5 with folk singer and monologist Elaine Dundas highlighted that event, a literary review May 9, the monthly luncheon and card party May 12, and a Lady Bugs visit May 26 to Russell Baldwin's garden. The June 2 meeting at the clubhouse will see the installation of new officers as well as the End of the Year Potluck, and before the Ramona Woman's Club adjourns until September the Literary Section and the Lady Bugs will combine for a catered luncheon June 13 at Montecito High School.
