Clubs & Organizations section
Not all of Ramona's clubs and organizations have curtailed their activities for the Summer. Some of them are just starting their club year.
The Rotary Club year runs from July 1 through June 30, and after being installed at the Ramona Rotary Club's June 30 demotion dinner (where Chuck Demund was demoted to immediate past president), Bill Jenkin took office as the chapter president effective July 1. His first Rotary function as president was the July 4 celebration at which approximately 5,000 community members turned out for the fireworks and other festivities. Rotarians participated in cleanup efforts July 5 prior to that day's meeting, and on July 12 the Rotary chapter adopted its annual budget which designates plans for donations for Montecito School and the Senior Center as well as for scholarships for local high school seniors. The first actual expenditure of the budgeted donations occurred on July 26, when a check for Rotary International's Village Bank project was provided. The Village Bank allows impoverished women to own their own businesses, and the chapter's $2,250 contribution to the Village Bank in Ecuador will be increased by a matching funds program. The July 19 meeting included a speaker from the Old Globe Theater, and the July 26 meeting included a guest speaker on the topic of health insurance as well as the inductions of new members Leo Dufresne and Amber Ramirez. On July 27 several club members traveled to La Jolla for the District Council meeting to hear Rotary International president-elect Bill Boyd. July also saw Jenkin and Ramona Kiwanis Club president-elect Bob Hailey discuss the possibility of a community project involving all of Ramona's service clubs. August meetings of the Ramona Rotary Club will include a guest speaker from the Leg Up Ranch on August 2, a Rotary Foundation speaker August 9, a U.S. Postal Service representative August 16, a guest speaker from Lost Boys of Sudan on August 23, and the district's Village Bank coordinator August 30. The club's July activities also included an agreement with Ramona High School which will provide for an Interact club when the school year begins. For more information on the Ramona Rotary Club contact Bill Jenkin at (760) 788-1181. ¶ ¶ ¶ Jenkin is a vintner when he's not performing volunteer work, and on August 10 he will be the guest speaker at the Ramona Garden Club meeting. Jenkin will speak about growing grapes in one's yard and will cover planting, harvest, and other topics. The meeting at the Ramona Senior Center will begin at 10:00 a.m. For additional Ramona Garden Club information contact Iris Price at (760) 788-8035. ¶ ¶ ¶ On July 17 the Julian Historical Society hosted a picnic at Heise Park with guest speaker Don Harrison, whose journalism career included serving as publisher of the San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage. Harrison has written a book on Louis Rose, who was the first Jew in San Diego, and he spoke about his book at the Julian Historical Society event. The Julian Pioneer Museum, meanwhile, is hosting an exhibit called "Letters from Home" which were written to a World War I serviceman and which were donated to the museum this Spring. The museum, which is open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Wednesday through Saturday during the Summer, also has other information from the 1910 to 1920 era on display. ¶ ¶ ¶ In addition to meeting with Jenkin, Ramona Kiwanis Club president-elect Bob Hailey spent part of July 16 in San Marcos for new officer training as did chapter secretary-elect Mary Halliday. That prevented Hailey and Halliday from helping the rest of the chapter with the library book sale that day, but they will have another opportunity to assist other club members who will set up the August 20 book sale before performing the post-sale clean-up work. In addition to their book sale work, the Kiwanis presented a $550 check to Jan Pickton, the founder and president of Emergency Animal Rescue, on July 10. That money represents half of the $1,100 proceeds of the Bow Wow Pow Wow dog show June 12; the remaining $550 will be used for scholarships. The Kiwanis will raise additional money for scholarships with the food booth at the Country Fair August 4-7; they will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, and drinks. The food booth will travel to Julian on September 3 for the Julian Grape Stomp at Menghini Vineyards. Ramona's Kiwanis chapter also participated in a July 19 interclub visit at Hidden Valley. Hailey will take office in October, and until then the chapter president is Darrell Beck, who can be reached at (760) 789-2534. ¶ ¶ ¶ The Ramona Trails Association spent part of July 4 at the community picnic, where the association sold corn-on-the-cob and hosted a horseshoe pit. On July 9 the Ramona Trails Association had a work party at the Mount Woodson staging area, and on July 16 the group took a ride in Cuyamaca State Park. A second July work party took place at Cougar Canyon, where organic spraying during the July 20 work party will hopefully remove some of the poison ivy on the trail owned by the Ramona Unified School District, used by many Mount Woodson School students, and maintained by the Ramona Trails Association. The August work party, scheduled for August 13, will also work on clearing Cougar Canyon before the school year begins. The August meeting will not have a speaker but will take the form of a barbecue August 3 at Honowetz's Ranch, and the next scheduled guest speaker at a Ramona Trails Association meeting is Rick Thompson, the trails coordinator for the City of San Diego, who will speak to the group September 7. For more information about the Ramona Trails Association, contact Cheryl Wegner at (760) 788-0354.
