Butterfield B&B Named ‘Outstanding Inn’

By Ruth Lepper

Butterfield Bed & Breakfast, one of the longest-running inns in Julian, has been named “Outstanding Inn in the Southwest and West” by an organization that deals with inns throughout the United States and on the international level.

BedandBreakfasts.com, a leading online reservation network, tallied more than 18,000 votes during a 12-month period to come up with its list of winners.

Innkeepers Dawn and Ed Glass expressed their appreciation for the award and the honor it has brought to the town.

“When you look at the properties that are listed (on the Web site), I’m just amazed,” Dawn Glass said.

Butterfield Bed & Breakfast was selected as one of the top inns in the Southwest and West, along with three in Texas, one in New Mexico, one in British Columbia and one other in California in the small town of Ferndale.

“We were delighted to have been chosen and proud to be in such good company in the Best of BedandBreakfast.com Awards,” Ed Glass said.

“It is gratifying to be recognized among the top inns in the Southwest and West. Having been longtime B&B guests ourselves prior to buying Butterfield six years ago, we know how hard all innkeepers work to serve their guests and create a compelling and relaxing environment for their stay. It is our plasure to receive this award, not only for us, but on behalf of the historic mining town of Julian.”

Dawn and Ed Glass purchased Butterfield Bed & Breakfast in 1999 and have added the adjoining property, with the more secluded Black Oak Cabin. The inn, at 2284 Sunset Dr., has five bedrooms with communal living and dining rooms where guests gather for special breakfasts served by their hosts, and share in the friendly atmosphere of the inn.

The Glasses were working in the electronics industry — she was in quality assurance and he was in marketing and sales — in the San Francisco Bay area when they decided to make a change in their careers and lifestyle.

“It was the best thing we’ve ever done,” Dawn Glass said. “We really enjoy the community, the people up here. It’s a nice place to live and a nice place to visit.”

Recent visitors at the inn have been from Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Australia and the Netherlands, among many other places.
