The Julian Woman’s Club has received well-deserved recognition for its efforts in public charity, education and community service, winning 11 first-place awards at the California Federation of Woman’s Clubs’ district and state conventions.

Among other activities and responsibilities, the club maintains the Julian Pioneer Museum and raises more than $2,500 in scholarship money for local students each year.

The awards, given in May, were based on the projects and/or activities accomplished by the club in fiscal year 2004. The awards include the following, listed by category:

• First place in the Palomar District for “Preserving Our Heritage.” Includes maintenance of and work with the Julian Pioneer Museum, Grosskopf House and the Julian Woman’s Club’s clubhouse, also a historic Julian building.

• First place for “Reaching Out Internationally.” Given for work on Heifer Project International, which provides gifts of livestock to help the poor establish themselves economically in Third World countries.

Home Life

• First Place for “Immunize Now Program” and the “Helping Hands Program.”

Fundraising

• First place for the club’s efforts at putting on the Holiday Home Tour, and for the Heritage Opportunity Quilt made by members and raffled off at the Quilt Show in July.

Arts in the Community

• First place for donations for the Julian Junior Theater and money raised for the Julian High School Band.

• First place in the Palomar District for public relations.

Education

• First place in the Palomar District and in the state for work raising funds for the new Julian Library, starting a reading club and for scholarships given to Julian High School seniors every year.

Leadership

• First place in the Palomar District and in the state for membership orientation, leadership workshops, speakers, and for the Julian Woman’s Club members who also serve as state or district officers.

• First place in Palomar District and in the state for best efforts for membership retention, best overall membership program, and special recognition for achieving a 10 percent increase in membership this past year.

At the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs International Convention in Las Vegas, the Julian Woman’s Club also received special recognition for its distinguished service in the literacy program, “Tutoring from the Heart — Students Tutored.”
