October was sure an action packed month. Ramona’s clubs and organizations seem to be relieved of their busy October events and fundraisers. While still busy, November will offer a bit of reprieve. It’s time to get in gear and start preparing for the holiday season!

¶ ¶ ¶

The Ramona Senior Center and the Community Education Division of Palomar College have joined to offer a watercolor class. The class will be taught by Nancy Oleksa and will feature landscape techniques in traditional and experimental techniques. All levels of experience are welcome at the class, which meets from 9 to 11:50 a.m. each Thursday at the Ramona Senior Center, through Dec. 15. For information, call (760) 744-1150, ext. 5047.

The Ramona Chamber of Commerce announced its newly elected directors at its October mixer. Directors to serve the 2006-08 term include Kathy Smiley, Jennifer Jenkin, Doreen Smith, Bill Jenkin, Jo Fox and Patricia Hansen. The new board of directors will be inducted at the annual Installation Dinner to be held in January.

The Ramona Chamber of Commerce will present its annual Holiday Tree Lighting Dec. 10, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The winter event will take place on Main Street in the vacant lot between Ramona National Bank and D’Carlos. The tree lighting will once again feature the giant multi-light tree and 12 individually decorated trees by elementary schools. There will be a petting zoo compliments of the Ramona High School Ag Department. Kids can enjoy the hayride courtesy of Tony Montegna. An array of vendors will be on hand. The Ramona Sheriff’s Station is looking for senior volunteer patrol members age 50 or older to make vacation home checks, assist with traffic control, visit handicapped and elderly residents, and assist with special-purpose activities such as fingerprinting children. Qualifications include U.S. citizenship, a valid California driver’s license, and medical and auto insurance. The contact for the upcoming training academy is Bill Hicks at (760) 738-2481.

Ramona Kiwanis Club will visit the Poway Kiwanis Club Nov. 17 at their weekly meeting at the Hamburger Factory in Old Poway Park. As part of the club’s monthly service project, on Nov. 19, Kiwanians will help the Ramona Library at its book sale.

The Ramona Kiwanis Club Foundation is hosting a Holland America seven-night round-trip cruise from San Diego to the Mexican Riviera, leaving Saturday, April 15, 2006. Call Gordon or Donna Zick at (760) 789-0315 for details. Kiwanis meets at 7 a.m. each Saturday at the Ramona Sizzler.

Ramona Council of Arts, Unlimited will offer Polynesian dance instructed by Penni Evans. Ramona Council of Arts, Unlimited provides small enrichment classes by qualified instructors at a reasonable rate. Evans has been teaching Polynesian dance for many years and directs a professional group named the Young Polynesian Dancers. The class will be offered at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Jill’s Dance Studio for ages 13 years and up. Other classes being offered by Arts, Unlimited are tap dance, tumbling, dance theater (jazz, hip-hop and lyrical styles), preschool dance, and adult fitness. The Ramona Stars 4-H Club enrollment is open through November. The 4-H chapter meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Ramona Elementary School multipurpose room and participates in local fairs, learning days and shows. Leadership learning camps, picnics, dances and field trips also are offered. The Ramona Stars 4-H Club offers instruction in horse care and training; dog care and training; market cattle and veal; swine; poultry; breeding and market sheep; pygmy goats; dairy and market goats; rats and mice; quilting; embroidery; sewing; gardening; mosaic crafts; cooking and nutrition; and ATV and motorcycles. The chapter also is looking for adult volunteers to lead new projects. The annual Ramona Women’s Connection Craft Fair will be held Nov. 16 at the Ramona Sizzler. There will be homemade desserts, crafts and auction items from local businesses. This is a great way to start your Christmas shopping. All proceeds from the fair will be sent to missionaries affiliated with the Women’s Connection National Headquarters. Also on the program will be writer and published author, Diana Taylor. She will share how “A Runaway Finds Her Home.” Taylor is active in the Christian Writer’s Guild of San Diego. The salad-bar luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Ramona Sizzler, 4th and Main streets. Everyone is welcome; there are no membership dues. Cost of the Nov. 16 meeting is $8.50. The Ramona Rotary Club was in full swing during October. Holly Malan and Bob Vaughn were received as new members. The annual Casino Night fundraiser which took place Oct 15 is the vehicle to provide capital toward the betterment of our community.

On Nov 11, Rotary District 5340 will conduct the annual Paul Harris Gala, a black tie event to take place at the Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park. Rotary meets at noon each Tuesday at the Ramona Sizzler. For club information, call Bill Jenkin at (760) 443-1306.

The Ramona Woman’s Club will meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 3. Dr. Charles Frayley from Ramona Medical Diagnostic Services Inc. will speak about osteoporosis. Refreshments will be provided by Doris Stone and Lindsy Smith.

A noon luncheon and card party will be held Nov. 10 at the clubhouse. Pearl McCullough and Joyce Rothwell will be the hostesses. A “Chatter” table will be set aside for good conversation. This is a nice way to meet members. For reservations, call McCullough at (760) 789-9308.

The Literary Section will meet at 1 p.m., Nov. 14 at the clubhouse. Margaret Griffith-Jones will be the reviewer. Dimple McCullough and Ruth Lemke will serve as hostesses.

St. Mary’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church presents “Putting on the Ritz,” its third annual fundraising party and silent live auction. The auction extravaganza, along with wine tasting, chocolates and exceptional canapés, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at the church. Come and partake of great food, wonderful local wines, a selection of chocolates second to none and great auction item values. Vintners will include Pamo Valley Vineyards & Winery, Ramona Vintners Cellars and Schwaesdall Winery. Proceeds will go to help further St. Mary’s work within the community. The Ramona Garden Club will meet at 10 a.m. Nov. 9. Club member Carol Close, former Master Gardener, will share her expertise about gardening in Ramona. She

will discuss several plant topics, including easiest “bulletproof” plants; easy-to-start plants; edible weeds and flowers; plants that repel rabbits; plants that reseed; and plants that need little or no water. She also will offer tips to get gardeners through the January and August blahs. The Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center, 434 Aqua Lane. The Intermountain Volunteer Fire Department presents "Open Benefit Barrel Race" a fundraiser that promises a good time for all ages. The event will be held Nov 13 starting at 9 a.m. located at the beautiful new event facility at High Valley Ranch, 25955 Hwy 78, across from the IVFD Fire Station. Lots of prizes, open race $40 at 12 p.m., youth race $25 follows peewee, peewee $10 follow open, time only’s $4 ea or 3/$10 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Concessions on site facility fee $6.00, no alcohol, no dogs. The monthly luncheon meeting of the San Vicente Valley Club on Nov.17 will feature guest speaker Glenda Colbert. Her topic "Color Me" will cover a complete personal color guide in choosing a wardrobe, mixing and matching along with cosmetics and accessories. Social time will begin at 11 a.m., a brief meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch will be served at noon and Colbert will begin her program at 1 p.m. Reservations (or cancellations) must be made at the front desk of the San Vicente Inn by Nov 11; for information on the San Vicente Valley Club, call membership chairwoman Mary Lou Kohl at (760) 788-5778.

November's show at The Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery will feature art by students of Palomar College Community Education Art Instructor Carol Ravy. Carol's effervescent personality, her knowledge of watercolor technique, and her relaxed teaching methods, has produced a number of successful artists in many areas of San Diego County. She currently teaches at Warner Springs, Borrego Springs, and Ramona. Artistic works from these classes and workshops will be on display throughout the month of November.

Carol has demonstrated at the San Diego County Fair for several years. She is represented by The Banner Queen Trading Post Gallery located in Julian and is available for workshops and demonstrations.
