A new winery opened Sept. 3, bringing the total number of wineries in Ramona to nine.
Bill and Jennifer Jenkin started the new business venture, Pamo Valley Vineyards & Winery, at their ranch home on Burma Road. Although they cannot have a tasting room because of county regulations, they are growing grapes and bottling wine and already looking ahead to next year’s harvest.
The specialty wine this year is Ramona Duo, a combination of Syrah and Sangiovese wines. Next year, they expect to have bottles of Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Syrah and Sangiovese.
The Jenkins’ wines were first introduced at the Grape Stomp Fest in September at Menghini Winery in Julian. They also participated in the Oktoberfest, as well as the Business Expo in Ramona and at special events for the Rotary Club and Ramona Chamber of Commerce.
Jenkin is president of the Rotary Club, a director of the chamber and vice chairman of the Ramona Community Planning Group. He is seeking election as a state assemblyman and is campaigning for the primary election in June 2006.
He has been a Farmers Insurance agent for 19 years and has lived in Ramona since 1989.
Jennifer Jenkin works with her husband in the winery. She is a newly elected director of the Chamber of Commerce and is the office manager for Ramona Home Journal and Julian Journal.
They soon will be offering special discounts to members of the Pamo Valley Vineyards & Winery Wine Club. Information will be available on their Web site, www.pamovalleyvineyards.com. The Jenkins’ wines are available at Albertsons grocery store in Ramona, in the local wine section.
“Look for the pretty sunset on the label; the photo was taken right from our vineyard,” Bill Jenkin said.
Prior to starting his own winery, Jenkin was a partner in Ramona Cellars’ winetasting room for three years. He is the founder of the Ramona Vintners Association and a member of the San Diego County Vintners Association.
Pamo Valley Vineyards & Winery is open by appointment and can be reached at (760) 788-0920 or by e-mail at info@pamovalleyvineyards.com.
