Educating the World One Student at a Time!”

Club Z! In-Home Tutoring Comes to Ramona

By Jim Evans

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

— Nelson Mandela

For Ramona parents whose children might be struggling in school, help has arrived in the form of a new in-home tutoring program.

Club Z! is the world’s largest in-home, one-on-one tutoring program in the world, serving more than 250 cities throughout the United States. It has helped more than 100,000 students improve their grades, raise their test scores, learn productive study skills, build their academic self-confidence, and reach their full potential.

The program is relatively new in San Diego County but has opened seven branches in the past two years, said area director Pat Nelson, who serves the communities of Escondido and Ramona.

Founded in 1995 in Tampa, Fla., Club Z! employs state-certified teachers or degreed professionals with a passion for teaching. The majority of Club Z! tutors teach or have taught in public or private schools.

Students are assigned the same tutor throughout the duration of Club Z! tutoring. Instruction is individualized — not one teacher to five, six or more children — and immediately after each session, Club Z! tutors meet with parents to review the child’s progress.

Club Z! uses the curriculum of the student’s classroom, and tutors do not introduce new material that will only further overwhelm an already struggling student. Tutors work with currently assigned classroom homework and scheduled examinations, and students are allowed to work at their own pace. Club Z! offers tutoring for children K-12 (including students with learning disabilities), and adults, in all core subjects — such as reading, mathematics, science and history — plus tutoring in study and organizational skills, assessment testing such as SAT and ACT, diagnostic testing and more.

Tutoring usually is scheduled in the comfort and security of the student’s home, free from distractions, but tutoring sessions also may be held at schools, libraries or community centers.

Club Z! is an approved provider of “supplemental education services” for the federal No Child Left Behind act in many states and is applying to be approved in all 50 states. Through this program, parents of qualified students who attend schools that fail to provide quality education may choose Club Z! to provide tutoring services.

Many Club Z! branches provide tutoring to at-risk children at a reduced cost through various social-services programs. Some of these programs have grants to provide families with whatever assistance is deemed necessary. Club Z! also is involved in providing educational services to homebound children who are otherwise unable to attend school because of illness or physical limitations.

“We have well over 100 tutors in San Diego County and a rapidly growing number in Ramona, teaching all subjects and grades,” Nelson said. “We have both male and female tutors, and all tutors are carefully selected and matched with our students.”

Nelson, a native of Muncie, Ind., was introduced to Club Z! by her daughter-in-law, who is an area director in San Diego County.

“I was looking for a rewarding opportunity with a proven, successful company,” Nelson said. “Club Z! provided me with that opportunity, plus it also gives me the chance to give back to the community.”
