Explorer Post offers First-Hand Experience
Since 2004, the Julian Volunteer Fire Station has been host to the Explorers program, a division of the Boy Scouts of America. The Explorer Post offers local youth first-hand experience in the fields of emergency medical and fire services. Cadets are invited to "ride along" with paramedics and firefighters, as well as train side by side with other first-responders. The Explorer Program provides the information, training and experience necessary for those interested in a career in fire and emergency medical services. In North County, there are two fire stations that offer the Explorer Program, the Vista Fire Department and the Julian Volunteer Fire Station. Since 2004, the Julian Volunteer Fire Station has had several young men and women graduate from the Explorer Program and continue on to careers in medical service and/or firefighting. If an Explorer Program member remains in good standing with the department after graduation, and is interested in pursuing a career in medical services, the Explorer Program will pay for the emergency medical training. The Explorer Program has been very successful with fundraising and enjoys investing in the future of its cadets. Five individuals have taken advantage of the free emergency medical unit courses and have gone on to join the United States Forest Service, the California Department of Forestry, volunteer fire departments and the Coast Guard. The Explorer Program is an excellent way to catapult into a rewarding and respected career. For more information, contact the Julian Volunteer Fire Station at (760) 765-2885.
