Merchants Schedule Open House on Main Street

By Bobbi Zane

The next Julian Merchants Association Open House Block Party is set for Main Street on March 20 when businesses along the south side of the street between Washington and B streets will remain open after regular hours.

This is the third of a series of community events designed to bring residents and visitors into local shops "to see the extent of merchandise and services available right here in our mountain town," according Melony Vance, owner of Books In Nooks in Wynola and event chair for JMA.

The following businesses have committed to participate in the March event: Julian Realty, Warm Hearth, Moms Pies, Jacks Market, Julian Hardware Store, Cider Mill and the Chamber of Commerce. Expect a festive atmosphere at all of these businesses, with music, refreshments, welcoming proprietors and some discounts on merchandise.

The first two of these events, held on the third Monday of each month, were successful with participating businesses reporting increased traffic and brisk sales. Last month, about 25 people braved the cold and visited the Santa Ysabel General Store, Sherrill Orchards, Somewhere in Time and Grandpa's Old Time Photo in Santa Ysabel. Block chair Patricia McConnell, owner of the antique shop in the general store, arranged for Dudley's and Julian Pie Company to provide refreshments. She also held a drawing for prizes donated by Santa Ysabel Antiques and Crossroads Treasures; winners were Rachael Pearsey and Bobbi Zane.

In January, at least 50 visitors and residents turned out for the event held at the Cole Building and surrounding shops on Main Street in Julian.

Upcoming block parties are scheduled for B and Third streets, Wynola Corners and Stonewall Stores.
