Open to individuals and groups of all ages is a "Bullhead Catfish Fishing Contest" at Lake Cuyamaca. Starting Memorial Day weekend, and continuing through Labor Day weekend, the largest bullhead catfish count, regardless of size, wins prizes. Prizes are awarded every other week and monthly to the registered participant who catches the most bullhead catfish in the specified time period.

The grand prize will be awarded at the end of the summer long event to the registered participant that catches the overall highest number of bullhead catfish. All ties will be decided by a random drawing. To register, pick up a form at the Lake Cuyamaca Tackle Shop. Dock hands will officially record your catch, and the completed form will be retained by the Tackle Shop so the winners can be notified by phone.

The "Free Kids Fishing Derby" is scheduled for Saturday, September 23. This annual tournament begins at 6 a.m. and the final weigh-in takes place around 11:30 a.m., followed by a free lunch and live music.

Lake Cuyamaca is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to sunset. Fishing permits are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children. You also need a California State Fishing License if you are 16 years old or older. These can also be purchased at the Tackle Shop. Boat rentals are also available on a first come, first serve basis. For more information call (760) 765-0515.
