New Queens to Represent Julian

Miss Julian 2006, Kathryn Olsen, is the daughter of Debbie and Larry Olsen, the third of four children. She has lived in the Julian area for 14 years. Katie, 16, will be a senior at Julian High School and is an accomplished piano player. She also plays basketball and volleyball. She provided the piano accompanies for the production, "A Christmas Carol" at Julian Town Hall in December 2005. Katie, a 4.0 student, plans to attending University of California, Los Angeles, or University of Southern California, majoring in history, sociology or music. She would like to teach music but her dream career is to be a pianist in a symphony orchestra. When asked why she competed to be the next Miss Julian, Katie responded. "It was a good challenge, it offered me a chance to explore communities outside of Julian, and a chance to give back to the Julian community." |

There are two new queens in town. Miss Julian 2006 is Kathryn Olsen and Teen Miss Julian 2006 is Kasie Engelman.
They were selected during a pageant on June 17. It was the fifth year for Miss Julian competition and the first year for the teen division.

Teen Miss Julian 2006, Kasie Engelman is an incoming freshman at Julian High School. Kasie, 13, was raised by her father, Greg Engelman, and currently works at the Julian Cider Mill. She enjoys swimming and participating in after-school programs such as Club Timberwolf and religious studies. When asked why she entered the Teen Miss Julian Pageant, Kasie responded, "To put myself up to the challenge and see if I could accomplish it." |

The queen's court includes Catie Myers as first princess, Amanda Young as second princess, who also won the Speech Award, and Kait Mushet as third princess and winner for Best Interview. The new queen also was awarded the photogenic title.
The teen queen's court includes Shaunae Bullock as first teen princess and winner of the Speech Award and Best Interview, and Daniela Retz as second teen princess.
These girls have a lot of work ahead of them.This year, the pageant winners will be directly involved with Breast Cancer Awareness and participate in fundraising walks for the cause.

The queens and princesses with be adorned with two different sashes this year, the regular sashes that they wear to most appearances and pink and white sashes that signifies their support for the fight against breast cancer.
Miss Julian and Teen Miss Julian will also have two different crowns that they will wear at appearances. One is considered a travel crown and is lighter and easier to maneuver, as opposed to the crowns that they were awarded at the coronation ceremony, which are more elaborate and heavier crowns.
Miss Julian is a representative of the community and serves as a youth ambassador. She works hard throughout her reign making appearances at local events as well as other events in the county such as the annual East County Boys & Girls Clubs' fundraiser at the Hotel Del Coronado and the San Diego County Fair. The title of Miss Julian is awarded to the contestant who the judges feel will best represent the community and will work whole-heartedly at being active and visible within community.

This year there were four contestants in the Miss Julian division and eight vying for the title in the teen pageant.
Other contestents for Miss Teen were Amanda Brooking Kendall, who won the Spirit Award; Starrla Feldmann, Chelsea Galkoski, Connie Galkoski and Alexandra Ortega.
Previous to show time all contestants competed in a speech competition and had individual interviews with the judges. The speech is not graded, while the interview portion of the competition weighs heavily on the overall scores that determine who will be the new queen. The rest of the scores are based on poise and stage presentation, sportswear, evening gown and the on-stage question.
The pageant began the reigning Miss Julian, Eireann Hutchinson. singing the National Anthem to a sold-out crowd. All contestants, including Hutchinson, danced in the opening number, "On Broadway," that was also choreographed by Hutchinson.

Norah Kanine, Miss Lakeside 2004, was the mistress of ceremonies. She was joined by Rebecca Thomas, Miss Julian 2004, who introduced visiting area queens and past Miss Julian queens and princesses.
Hutchison was awarded a $400 savings bond from the Julian Woman's Club and a $400 savings bond from the Miss Julian Pageant.
