Six entries from Julian and two from neighboring communities captured all the awards at the Fourth of July Parade this year.
Miners Diner, owned by Tom and Janet Kendall, snagged the top prize, the Grand Marshal award. The entry was a Root Beer Float float, created and driven by Virginia Chavez. Riding on the float were George and Martha Washington, a continental soldier and Betsy Ross, who was mending a flag, which was flown on missions in Iraq by Bob Kendall of the 101st Airborne.
Ed and Denise Kelly, who boast that four generations of their family have served in the military, captured the theme prize, illustrating Guardians of Liberty, which honored American heroes.
The Best Musical award went to the Howling Coyotes, Julian residents, who have a new CD with 14 original songs. The CD is available at Soups and Such Caf and at A Rose Path.
The Mountain Tribal Gypsy, Julian's tribal dance troop for women and girls ages 7 to 70-plus, captured the Best Specialty award for its belly dancing down Main Street.

Kids riding tricycles, some they decorated themselves, represented the Mountain Kids Co-op, a parent-driven preschool program. That entry won the Best Youth award. Volunteers Allison and Greg Conitz drove their 1930 Model A Ford as part of the entry. The final local winner was a float created by Patty and Dale Strong, owners of Mountain Beadworks. It was named the Best Motorized entry.
Two winners came from nearby communities Escondido and Dulzura: The Best Equestrian entry featured the California State Firefighters' Association's 1902 American steam engine fire truck pulled by a team of three Belgian draft horses; and the Dulzura Desperadoes, an historic re-enactment group that won the Best Open Entry award.
Judging was done the morning of the parade by a committee spearheaded by Marion Moore. Diana Garrett and Susan Meyer assisted for the third consecutive year.
