It's Magical: Group Hopes to Expand to Julian
By Amber Ward

Master Magician Freddy Caplan.
Like to perform tricks? Want to learn the ins and outs of being a magician?

If so, then the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M) is ready to share some its best-kept secrets with Julian residents.

The group is interested in forming a branch in the back country. Master Magician Freddy Caplan, S.A.M. Assembly No. 40 president, is offering to teach those with a genuine interest, the art of magic.

After a group of members has been established, a Junior Assembly for teens ages 14-17 years old also will be formed. Caplan will teach a course using lesson plans and will cover topics including cards, rubber bands, impromptu, "restaurant" magic and stage magic. Stage writing, routines and other topics will also be covered.

Plans call for an annual dinner and magic show along with the opportunity to entertain seniors and other community members.

The group is planning on meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays every month at Books In Nooks, 4336 Highway 78. Call 760-782-1902, for more information.

S.A.M. was founded in New York City in 1902, making it the oldest magic organization in the world. The society has members in 250 cities worldwide and boasts a membership of 30,000, including all of the top names in magic.
