Carlee Roberts of Ramona is the elementary school division winner of this year's "Character Matters' essay contest at the University of San Diego.

Roberts read her winning essay aloud during the awards ceremony on June 24. She was honored with a $100 first prize and a plaque.

In her essay, "A Character Named Cowboy," she talked about moving to a rural area and the challenges of learning to ride a horse. Her horse inspired her not to give up.

Roberts is the daughter of Todd and Chris Roberts.

Her teacher Wendy Karch encouraged students to enter the contest.
