Laustsen Among Local Artists Exhibiting at Fine Art and Musical Festival

Danish-born Kaja Laustsen will be among the many local artists exhibiting in the 20th annual Menghini Winery Fine Art and Music Festival, Sept. 23 and 24 in Julian.

Art has always been an integral part of Laustsen's life. She remembers at the age of 2 "improving" her father's work on a pastel-colored painting with large gushes of red paint while he was out of the room.

Majoring in business and fashion design in Denmark, she has been involved in various projects from helping design the first jumpsuit for flight attendants to creating costumes for the movie industry. Until recently, she operated her own fiber-arts boutique in Julian.

As a young adult, Laustsen realized her early ambition to become an archeologist, a passion she pursued professionally until 1978. The study of cultures as a reflection of nature continues to be a great inspiration for her art.

In fact, her current work is more and more multi-media, a "metamorphosis" growing out of her constant exploration of materials and experimentation with processes. Her beautiful woven necklaces are blends of color and texture that speak to her love of nature. She will also be showing her wire-wrapped jewelry and new silk paintings, which evoke an ancient, yet modern effect.

In a recent collaboration with Julian artist Marge Rubensen, Laustsen mixed ceramics with fiber and metal to create an extraordinary exhibit at UCS's Faculty Club.

Her work can be seen at the Banner Queen Gallery and Julian Yesteryears. She also participates in the monthly Ray@Night celebrations in Hillcrest and will be one of the artists in the Julian Open Studios Tour at the end of October.

The Menghini Winery Fine Art and Music Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free with plenty of free parking. The winery is located three miles north of Julian, at the intersection of Farmers and Wynola roads. For more information, call 760-765-2569.
