In the Pines: Decor and Gifts for Cabin, Camp & Lodge
By Amber Ward

Hoping to provide the kind of store that appeals not only to visitors but to locals as well, Scharlyn O'Connor has opened In the Pines, a new shop in Julian.

Located in the Stonewall building, Suite 102, In the Pines provides comfortable shopping in a casual and welcoming atmosphere.

O'Connor moved to the Julian area from Rancho Penasquitos two years ago with her husband, Kevin. The couple has a 9-year-old son, Van, a 13-year-old son, Mitchell, and a 22-year-old daughter, Shannon, who lives down the hill.

Scharlyn O'Connor has been visiting Julian for the last 20 years to hike and shop. She always felt that she was doing it backward, "I should have been living here, and visiting the city," she said with a laugh.

She had fancied the idea in the past about being a shop owner, and frequently checked Julian real estate listings. "Seeing openings on Main Street planted the idea that Julian was the place to open my business," she said.

A newlywed, Scharlyn and her husband recently spent their honeymoon in Mammoth, where she saw some great mountain- and lodge-themed stores. She knew that a similar theme would fit Julian.

Upon returning from her honeymoon, she saw a shop available on Main Street and knew that it wouldn't last. She jumped on it and couldn't be happier with her decision.

In the Pines features cabin and lodge decor. Most of the items are American made, including hand-poured Aunt Sadie's Candles from Boston. There are also Life is Good housewares and clothing, country cookbooks, hunting and fishing collectibles, Americana and Christmas decor, a variety of other seasonal items, Lincoln Logs, King Leo treats, Bluegrass CDs, sheepskin and flannel bedding, novelty lights and Photos by Albie.

"In the Pines" has something for everyone, even if all you want is a nice place to sit and relax with a friendly game of checkers.

O'Connor promises "to keep the store comfortable and full of fresh, new items."

In the Pines is located at 2000 Main St., in the Stonewall building, Suite 102. Store hours are 11 a.m. to

5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. There's a 10 percent local discount as well as weekly specials. For more information call 800-939-5894.
