Julian resident, Cindy Vegamilia contacted Channel 8 News because the star on top of the Julian Christmas tree did not stay lit. It was cost prohibitive to rent another lift to replace the bulb. Jeff Miller, a lift operator from San Diego, saw the Channel 8 News story about the burned out bulb, and contacted Hawthorne Rental about the dilemma. Hawthorne donated a lift and transported it to Julian December 21. Miller, along with Ed Glass, replaced the bulb in the star.

Jeff Miller also brought five live Christmas trees to donate to the community. In exchange for his good deed, the community of Julian pulled together and presented him with several gift certificates, inviting him to come back and stay in Julian.
