Detour of SR 78 Changed

State Route 78 through Scissors Crossing to Yaqui Pass road will remain open to motorists without restrictions on weekends announced California Department of Transportation Wednesday, December 20. After meeting with Borrego Springs businesses and residents along with off-road-vehicle enthusiasts, Caltrans decided to modify the road closure plan for the San Felipe Creek Bridge.

The bridge, located about 20 miles east of Julian, will be under construction as early as Wednesday, January 3 2007 but this is contingent on the possible effect of weather conditions on the new concrete.

The plan is to complete the project by mid March and motorists can expect delays of up to a half hour if they use the highway on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. One-way traffic control will allow motorists to pass through the construction zone during this time, however motorists are advised to drive with caution through the construction zone as the lanes are narrowed but still wide enough to accommodate all vehicles.

During construction SR 78 will be open to two-way traffic on Fridays from 4 p.m. through Mondays at 6 a.m.

The modified plan calls for spending an additional $200,000 for the $3.74 million project to accommodate the need for travel through the area and at the same time allow work on bridge safety upgrades.

Motorists are also encouraged to explore alternate routes to their final destinations before leaving home if they feel unsure about using SR 78.
