Do you remember the old nursery rhythm where Mother Hubbard goes to the cupboard but finds the cupboard bare? Well, thanks to local scouts who collected over 1,000 pounds of food for families in need, Mother Hubbard can rest easy.

The annual event "Scouting for Food" was held on Saturday, Feb. 10 and thousands of scouts participated nationally. According to Ramona resident and district coordinator Dawn Perfect, six units took part in Ramona.

Perfect, who has been the district coordinator for five years, said that the scouts' participation demonstrated their "spirit of volunteering."

Michelle Scott of Pack No. 692, said that her boys collected more than 600 items setting an all-time record. Scott says that this event promotes community service, responsibility, and compassion; all the while the boys are having fun.

All cans and non-perishable food items were brought to the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet, 773 Main St. in Ramona. From there, the food was sent to homeless and low-income families in Ramona.

The staff at the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet said this was a great opportunity to replenish depleting inventory. Donations are accepted year-round.

In addition to being recognized at their respective pack and troop meetings, each scout 10 years old and younger will receive a patch for participating. Scouts 11 years or older will receive community service hours, redeemable toward the highest level of achievement in scouting, Eagle Scout.

If you would like to make a donation for "Scouting for Food" please contact Dawn Perfect at 760-788-1983. If you would like more information about activities or joining Boy Scouts of America, please visit www.sdicbsa.org.
