Johnny McDonald's book, "San Diego Motorsports: 100 Racing Years," placed second in a national competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The announcement was made by the American Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association.

The 144-page book has more than 450 photos and illustrations. It was published by the Ramona Home Journal and is being sold throughout Southern California.

McDonald, a nationally known freelance writer, has been a member of the Ramona Home Journal and Julian Journal writing staffs since the inception of the publications.

He has won several San Diego Press Club awards. He is a former sportswriter for the old San Diego Union newspaper, where he covered motorsports, boxing, horse racing and the Coast League Padres.
