'Chicago' Star Shares His Views on Acting

Risqué dancing, alcohol and murder all come together under the direction of Walter Bobbie to create a powerful story in the musical, "Chicago." With the help of lawyer Billy Flynn, played by George Hamilton, two murderers try to "razzle dazzle" the jury and just might pull it off.

Hamilton, originally from Memphis, has lived all across the United States. After winning a statewide competition for acting at the age of 18, Hamilton made his way out to California to pursue his acting career.

He quickly landed a substantial role in "Crime and Punishment, USA," and was then signed to a seven-year contract with MGM. Since then, he has appeared in about 80 movies and between 200 and 300 television episodes of various programs. Movies such as "Godfather 3," "The Light in the Piazza" and "Love at First Bite," are all in his repertoire.

In a telephone interview from New York City, where he is in rehearsals for "Chicago," Hamilton said he has always enjoyed playing comedic roles, something for which he is well known, aside from being suave and handsome.

Hamilton's advice for anyone who may be thinking of becoming involved in acting is to "find a better job first."

He goes on to say, "Acting is a tough business where you have to learn to pace yourself and teach yourself discipline. It is hard at first, but once you have gained success, it's a lot of fun."

With the flashy choreography and costumes in "Chicago," it's sure to make for an interesting night out on the town. Set in the roaring '20s, jazz is the imminent theme that is woven throughout this story of two women who will do whatever it takes to find success and fame - even if at first, they are infamous.

Lady Luck is on their side, however, when the famous defense lawyer (and ladies man) agrees to take on these two high-profile cases. Hamilton notes that it's when one of the main characters, Roxie Hart, realizes just how easily fame came to her, then it is all gone in the blink of an eye - or the shot of a gun, rather.

A national touring company from Broadway/San Diego, "Chicago" will be playing at the San Diego Civic Theatre from Sept. 4 to 9. Tickets are available from $19 to $75. Call the box office at 619-570-1100.
