DESERT FESTIVAL CANCELS GALA, PARADE
Resources constrained by San Diego Fires

October 24, 2007

The 42nd Annual Borrego Days Desert Festival Committee announces the cancellation of two scheduled events due to circumstances related to fires raging in nearby communities:

· "Diamonds & Gold," Gala Reception - Thursday, October 25th, 6pm
· Festival Kick-off Parade - Saturday, October 27th, 11am

The "Diamonds & Gold" Gala Reception on Thursday, October 25th was planned to honor popular TV personality Huell Howser, producer/host of PBS-TV's "California's Gold" travel program.  Howser was set to receive a "Diamonds & Gold" award in recognition of outstanding contributions promoting California State Parks and tourism.  Those with confirmed reservations are being contacted about the cancellation by telephone.

The Festival Kick-off Parade, Huell Howser as the Grant Marshal, had enlisted nearly 1000 area participants, from marching bands and precision drill teams to dance troupes, car clubs, and equestrians.  San Diego County's Department of Public Works requested the Parade's cancellation because required County safety personnel would not be available.  Participants are being notified by email and telephone.

"The situation in San Diego County is so devastating right now that all available resources must be focused on helping those in need," said Board President Gwenn Marie.  "In light of the situation, we're doing the right thing."

Events planned for Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th at Borrego Springs' picturesque Christmas Circle will take place as scheduled, starting at 9am Saturday.  An extensive Arts & Crafts Fair, a variety of food vendors, the American Legion Beer Garden, a free concert by Latin guitar world fusion band, Incendio, Kid Zone attractions, Classic Car Show, and family entertainment will mark the traditional Festival's observance.

Since Borrego Springs High School is an official Red Cross evacuation center, it's likely that many evacuees will be on hand for the weekend celebration.  "We hope we can make a positive contribution that will lift everyone's spirits and give people a reason to smile," said Erica Savage, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce.  "We hope our guests will enjoy spending a great weekend outside in the beautiful Anza-Borrego Desert State Park."
