FIRE UPDATE Water Situation Remains
Critical By Ruth Lepper
The water situation in Ramona remains critical, with workers on the job
around the clock. Ron Mulick, of Ramona Municipal Water District, said Thursday
morning that about one-third of the water meters in the district have been
turned off in an effort to allow more pressure to get into the main lines.
Two generators are up and running at the pump station in Poway, as of
Wednesday morning.
"We're still filling the pipe lines," Mulick said at 9 a.m. Thursday. "There
is no storage yet. It hasn't gotten up high enough to get into the lines."
Before the fire, RMWD was providing 7 million gallons of water per day to its
customers. The demand is much greater now with water needed to fight the fires,
Mulick said that reaching 7.5 million gallons on Thursday is not enough.
The "boil water alert" remains in effect for anyone who has stayed in Ramona.
* National Guard patrolling Ramona, on lookout for looters or
other suspicious activity.
* Free bottled water available at 7-Eleven store on Main Street.
* California Highway Patrol reports all agencies are working diligently to
re-open the roads to Ramona. CHP, San Diego Sheriff's Department, CalTrans, the
county of San Diego and Cal Fire, which is the lead agency, must all agree it is
safe for residents to return to their homes. The county must determine that the
infrastructure is safe.
* San Diego County Department of Health has closed all food service areas in
Ramona, due to the water situation.
* Ramona Unified School District employees, with proper identification, will
be allowed back into Ramona to prepare for schools opening on
Monday.
