Many Tears, Some Cheers; a New Season is Born By Tracy Rolling

| The 28th season for Ramona Pop Warner kicked off Sept. 1 when Carlos Don's jersey was retired. Carlos was a star player who died in February from complications from MRSA (a serious bacterial infection).
A banner was unveiled before the Jr. Midget game at Bulldawg Stadium in Ramona as the No. 24 was removed from any future line-ups. Also, No. 24 was incorporated onto the Dawgs' helmets this season as a tribute to the Don family and in remembrance of Carlos.
Though the community mourns the loss of a fallen football player and loyal friend, league President Ben Narramore said, "This season looks promising because we have a lot of returning kids and that means we have experience on the field."
It didn't take long for his predictions to unfold - at least not for the Mighty Dawgs, who stomped the Escondido Lobos, 26-8. The Pee Wee Dawg Pack pounced the Penasquitos Rebels, 13-6, as the Jr. Midget Guard Dawgs celebrated a victory over the Oceanside Fearless Wildcats, 22-19.
In addition to support from local businesses and sponsors, Greiner Pontiac, Buick, GMC and All American KTM have donated a motorcycle as an end-of-season raffle. One lucky winner will take home a 105cc motorcycle during halftime at the final game of the Packwood Bowl held at Bulldawg Stadium in Ramona.
You can show your support by purchasing a raffle ticket for $5 at the Greiner showroom, 13811 Poway Road in Poway, or at All American KTM, 872 Main St. in Ramona. All proceeds will benefit the Ramona Pop Warner.
Tickets also will be available at all home games and the winner does not need to be present. Other rules and restrictions apply, see the Ramona Pop Warner Web site at www.ramonapopwarner.net for more information.
