About 700 people braved chilly weather to witness the official lighting of Julian's Christmas tree on Nov. 24. The largest crowd ever attended the annual event and listened to songs by David Barron, poetry read by Charlotte Mitchell, and carols by The Victorian Singers. A countdown preceded the big moment when Julian Merchants of the Year, Ed and Dawn Glass of Butterfield Bed and Breakfast, threw the switch, and the tree, strung with thousands of LED lights, came to life. Minutes later, Santa arrived by fire truck with sirens blaring, and greeted kids anxious to have their wishes heard. Santa-themed flashlights and bells were given out by Miss Julian and her court, and Santa handed out peppermint candy sticks from King Leo. It was a perfect kickoff for the holiday season.
