Webelows Woods A Virtual Scouting Experience
Originally scheduled for October 2007, the weekend camping experience was cancelled due to the wildfires. It was postponed to December, then cancelled again because of heavy rain and predicted floods. Finally in February, more than 1,200 San Diego and Imperial County scouts, family members and leaders loaded up their camping gear and headed to Mataguay Scout Ranch. The Ranch is located north of Santa Ysabel and south of Warner Springs and is perched 3,200 feet above sea level. Despite the cool temperatures ranging in the 50s during the day, down to a chilly 29 degrees at night, "The scouts were given the opportunity to demonstrate many of the skills they've learned throughout their scouting career," said Cub Master Don Scott of Pack 692, praising the boys for proving their endurance and rising to the occasion.
The 840-acre ranch run by Boy Scouts of America provided an excellent weekend of camping, hiking, fishing and plenty of outdoor activities, including an obstacle course, rope bridges, tug-of-war, knot tying, sled racing, first aid education, including CPR, and a chance for scouts to create a makeshift gurney. In addition to cooking and cleaning, the scouts built a log bridge across a five foot creek and learned important character traits like teamwork and self esteem. Pack 692 Webelows 2 Den Leader Jim Stemper reported, "The camp was an opportunity for boys to demonstrate responsibility. The activities they participated in will help the boys achieve their goals to earn patches towards their 'Arrow of Light,' a transition between Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts."
