| Ramona High School NJROTC drill team competed Saturday, Feb. 9, at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove. The group was vying for the last three spots at the prestigious Area 11 Super Bowl. Area 11 is comprised of 59 schools, but only 16 schools qualify for this event, with a first-, second- or third-place finish. Twelve schools competed for the three remaining spots, and the competition was fierce.
Drill meet events include personnel inspection, armed basic routine, unarmed basic routine, armed exhibition, unarmed exhibition, color guard, sit-ups, push-ups, relays and academic exam.
Ramona took 40 cadets and achieved an overall finish of second out of 12 schools at the meet. The drill team took first place in academics and sit-ups, second place overall in physical fitness and second place overall in drill events. Additionally, Erica Ellis placed first out of 180 on the academic exam, and Sabrina O'Gwynn took second.
Kelsey Perry took first out of 96 in female sit-ups, completing 172 sit-ups. Brandi Hietala took third, completing 120. Perry finished second place out of all 192 competitors in sit-ups, male and female combined.
Ramona's Commanding Officer, Jed Stock, was ranked the number one CO of the 12 schools in competition.
Ramona came home with nine trophies, and a lot of happy kids and parents were encouraged. This was the first year Ramona has ever competed in a complete Area 11 drill meet and the odds of making it to Super Bowl were against them. During the recently completed Pass and Review,Commander Liles promised the kids a very special surprise if they made it to Super Bowl. He thought he had a safe bet, but the cadets proved him wrong and are looking forward to his surprise.
