Julian Stables: Horseback Riding on Top of a Mountain

For many Julian visitors and locals, horseback riding showcases the local scenery in a unique way. At Julian Stables, riders get more than fantastic views, as the entire experience is designed to be safe, fun and special for each person.

"Our most popular ride is the one-hour guided trail ride," says Julian Stables owner Shirley DuErmit. "And for those who haven't ridden in a while, don't worry, we cater to beginners."

Whether the rider is a beginner or well-experienced, DuErmit promises the ride will be wonderful.

"We also offer a two-hour horsemanship clinic, which includes a full one-hour trail ride," she says. "In the clinic, you will learn a bit about the horse you are going to ride and the basics of grooming and saddling. We also spend some time in the arena so the rider knows how to stop, turn the horse and some other basics."

Rides are limited to five guests each. Often, DuErmit's daughter, Deanna Wolf, joins the riders, so that there will be two guides.

"By keeping the number of riders we allow small, we can ensure that each and every guest has a personal experience that they enjoy," she says.

The 30-acre private ranch is located at the top of a mountain. Riders enjoy views both to Cuyamaca and to Volcan Mountain.

"We can see all three peaks of the Cuyamaca Mountains, which are beautiful when they are covered in snow. On our highest ridges we can even see the ocean," she says. "Sometimes we can even make out Point Loma."

There are a variety of horses for the riders.

"We have horses to suit most everyone," she says. "Our breeds include Arabian, quarter horse, a quarter horse/mustang cross, a Tennessee walker and a Shire (draft)/quarter horse cross," she says. "We even have a miniature horse we use for carting."

In addition to the mountain views, riders can enjoy wildflowers in season, local birds, wild turkeys and sometimes even deer and bobcats.

Julian Stables also offers a unique experience for children.

"We offer one-day summer camps for kids," she says. "We try to get in as much horseback riding and horsemanship as possible. The kids even learn how to harness the miniature horse and cart and begin some driving."

DuErmit is certified with the American Riding Instructors Association, which includes extensive testing, essays, presentations and even video work.

"Safety is the number one concern of the Association," she says. "A safe ride is always more fun."

Along with her husband, Rich Wolf, and daughter Deanna, DuErmit has been running Julian Stables for 11 years.

"It keeps everybody working and happy," she says. "We keep things simple and affordable for our guests."

Julian Stables is located a mile and a half west of town; as part of the fun, the exact location is kept secret until reservations are made. All rides are by reservation only. For information, call 760-765-1598 or visit: www.julianactive.com.
