New Library Site Celebrated

County library officials and community residents turned out on April 19 to celebrate the site of a new library planned for Ramona. The event-filled day was complete with a hot-air balloon to recognize the occasion as a "lift-off" for the proposed library.

Friends of the Ramona Library moved its monthly book sale to the new site for the lift-off celebration, making it a successful day for the organization, as well as for buyers looking for bargains in purchasing new and used books.

Several local organizations were on hand to provide information or to man food booths. Soroptimist Club members were making cotton candy and the Kiwanis Club barbecued hot dogs. Ramona Art Guild displayed works of art, while the Pioneer Historical Society offered postcards and books by local authors.

A popular booth was called "Stump the Librarian," with participants spinning a wheel of fortune before selecting cards with trivia questions. If the librarian couldn't come up with the correct answer, token prizes were awarded.

The 19,400-square-feet proposed library, which is about three times larger than the present facility, will be built at Main and 13th streets. A date has yet to be set for construction to begin, but the county Board of Supervisors approved funding in late March for $11.6 million for the Ramona library. The county currently is accepting proposals from developers, with an expected date of completion for early 2010.
