Seven months after losing his wife to cancer, George Ragsdale succumbed to an apparent heart attack. He was 76.
His wife of 40 years, Beverly Ragsdale, died Sept. 9, 2007. They were married in 1967 in San Diego and moved to Ramona in 1975.
George Luther Ragsdale was born Dec. 14, 1931, in Pleasant Hill, Missouri.
He served in the US Navy for more than 20 years, retiring as a lieutenant. He was stationed aboard the USS Rupertus during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was later employed as an air traffic controller for the federal government. When that program underwent budget cuts in the mid-1980s, Ragsdale became self-employed as a handyman.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 3783, in Ramona.
Survivors include the couple's four adopted children - Denise Sothman of Ramona, Christopher of San Diego, Kenneth of Ramona and Christian of Oklahoma; and eight grandchildren - Lily, Abby and Grayson Ragsdale; Travis, Jordyn and Jami Sothman; and CJ and Destiny Ragsdale.
Survivors also include his brother, Phillip Munson, of Kansas.
Interment ceremony will be at 1 p.m. May 6 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. A second service at the Memorial Wall at the VFW Post in Ramona is planned for 3 p.m. the same day, followed by a celebration of life at the post hall, 2247 Kelly St., Ramona.
Donations may be made in Ragsdale's memory to the VFW Post.
