| Colonel Rick Powell, a retired federal agent and longtime Ramona resident, has announced his candidacy for the 52nd Congressional District of California, a seat currently held by Rep. Duncan Hunter who is retiring after 28 years of service in the House of Representatives.
"America First!" is the motto of Powell's campaign.
Powell feels that America is facing critical issues in the area of economics, the housing market, national security and immigration. He states that the best-qualified candidate to represent the 52nd District must have local and a global perspective, extensive experience and the willingness to serve.
Powell joined the race, "not for prestige or career, but out of a sense of duty and love of my country," he said, adding that he's frustrated with Congress's lack of fortitude in dealing with those who would assault our way of life.
Colonel Powell brings to this position 23 years of federal law enforcement with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the U.S. Customs Service, Office of Investigations (OI). Powell was a special agent/supervisory special agent who investigated and prosecuted organized crime, narcotics smuggling organizations, weapons and explosive violations, the smuggling of missile and other high technologies and other related national security violations, both nationally and abroad.
In addition, he has an extensive military background, serving in Vietnam (1966) with the Marine Corps and as a U.S. Army Brigade Commander in Iraq and Kuwait (OIF 2003), commanding units in Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Afghanistan and Turkey. Powell has expertise in disaster emergency preparedness, special operations, military intelligence and leadership.
